Effective 05MAR1999
Filed 03FEB1999
Filing Codes I

1. This rule only applies when the pallet is shipper
owned. Carrier shall not directly or indirectly supply
the shippers with pallets or materials for construction
   of pallets.

2. Definition

"Unitized load" is a consolidation of shipping packages
secured to pallets, skids or skip sheets when the
individual component shipping packages are banded or
otherwise securely held together to form a single
shipping unit that has been prepared by the shipper in
   order to facilitate mechanical handling.

Dimensions of pallets recommended by International
   Standard Organization (I.S.O.) are: -

   32" x 40" (cm. 80 x 100)
   32" x 48" (cm. 80 x 120)
   40" x 48" (cm. 100 x 120)

3. Conditions of carriage

   a. The packages should cover the loading surfaces of
the pallet and be level at the top and squared on
the four sides, so that the unit forms a smooth
block capable of being stowed at least three tiers
in height without distortion or damage.

   b. Each unitized load shall consist of one commodity,
under one tariff item at one rate, having one mark,
moving from one shipper to one consignee.

   c. Each unitized load to be acceptable to the carrier
for stowage, safe handling and suitable for
      mechanical handling.

   d. Each unitized load to be a minimum of 550 kilograms
in weight or 1 cubic meter and a maximum of 2030
kilograms in weight with recommended height of
between 1.1 meters and 2.2 meters.

   e. Shipper shall indicate at time of booking that the
      shipment will be unitized.

4. Bills of Lading

   a. Bills of Lading will be issued to acknowledge receipt
of a given number of unitized loads said to contain
a given number of packages, and shall be claused:

"Shipper's Load and Count. Cargo covered by this
Bill of Lading has been unitized by the Shipper
and Shipper has arranged for Consignee and/or
receiver to take delivery of this shipment on the
same pallets received from the Shipper by the
         Carrier."

   b. Bills of Lading covering commodities which are
entitled to freight concession on unitized cargo
must show that the freight concession has been
      granted.

5. Freight Computation

Unitized loads as specifically provided for in this
rule shall be assessed freight on the gross weight
or measurement of the unit as a package in accordance
with Rule 24. The actual weight or measurement of the
pallet shall be excluded only to the extent that such
weight or measurement does not exceed 10% of the total
weight or measurement of the entire unit. The weight
or measurement of protective, reinforcing and other
external materials shall not be excluded except as may
be specifically provided for in a tariff item.

   Exception:

Upon shipper's request, unitized loads of measurement
cargo only, composed entirely of cartons or boxes of
the same standard size, the outer cartons or boxes
being visible to the carrier to permit inspection and
measurement, shall be assessed freight on the unit
by multiplying the actual measurement of one of the
cartons or boxes by the shipper's count of the total
number of cartons or boxes in the unitized load. The
measurement of the pallet, protective, reinforcing and
other external materials shall be excluded only to the
extent that such measurement does not exceed 10% of the
total measurement of the entire unti.
